EARL, William Fossey, Captain (Ret'd) - RCAMC
After losing a valiant struggle with illness at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on Friday, March 12, 2010 at the age of 89 years.
Bill was the son of Glenn and Ella Earl of Athens, ON and was predeceased by brother Lawrence and sister Marion. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years Barbara (nee Welford), daughter Paula Brown (Angus) of Ottawa, granddaughter Christine Shirota (Jiro) of Barrie and new great-grandson Callum.
Bill joined the Canadian Army (RCAMC) in 1938, serving during WWII in Canada and the UK. Returning to Canada with his war bride, he remained in the Army and served in a variety of postings in Canada and Germany. These included: 4 Fd Amb in Soest, as RSM of 1 Fd Amb in Valcartier, as RSM of the RCAMC School Camp Borden and again with 4 Fd Amb in Soest, this time as RSM. After being commissioned to the rank of Captain, he worked at the Canadian Section of BMH Iserlohn, Base Hospital Nanaimo AB and at 1 CMED Petawawa. He retired from the military after 37 years in 1975 and worked briefly at Storwall in Pembroke. Throughout his military career he was respected by superiors and subordinates alike. He is remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a "gentle gentleman" by all who knew him.
Visitation at the MALCOLM, DEAVITT & BINHAMMER FUNERAL HOME, 141 Renfrew St., Pembroke on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. March with a Memorial Service to be held at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel. Interment will follow immediately afterward at the National Military Cemetery, Ottawa at 3:00 p.m. (In lieu of flowers, donations to the Carefor Volunteer Palliative Care Program would be appreciated.) Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Pembroke Regional Hospital for their care and attention.
