HARKINS, Terry - passed away on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Terry was born in Iroquois Falls, Ontario on August 8, 1938, son of the late Laura and William Harkins. Beloved husband of 53 years to Coreen Harkins (nee Verch), he will be dearly missed by his daughter Kelly Leach (Perry) and his son Chris Harkins (Denise); as well as his four grandchildren who were the light of his life: Jonathan, Matthew, Breana & Carissa. He will also be sadly missed by his brother Norwood Harkins (Linda) and his sister Heather Arnold (Buck), the extended Verch family, and his many nieces, nephews & friends.
Terry was a dedicated educator for 44 years with the Renfrew County Board of Education, retiring as superintendent in 1995, and spent the past five years as a Trustee. Terry also served on the Ontario Education Leadership Centre board of governors in Orillia for many years, providing students with educational leadership opportunities.
Terry was an inspiration to many people, especially regarding the welfare of students. He developed many programs to assist students to achieve their goals. With his great sense of humour, and his love of people, he was able to make them laugh and see the bright side of most things.
Terry was a member of the Ontario Provincial Police Auxiliary for 35 years, retiring as an Auxiliary Chief Superintendent, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Terry also served on the Pembroke Police Commission Board.
