BARKELL, Ross Community Builder October 4, 1932 - June 7, 2013 Ross passed away peacefully early Friday, June 7, surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. Ross led a full and active life filled with love and service to his community. He was a longtime member of the Petawawa Rotary Club, a volunteer with the Pembroke Police Crimestoppers program. He and his wife Shirley enjoyed hosting Rotary International students in their home. Ross served with several other community organizations, including Miramichi Lodge, and served on the board of Wesley United Church. Ross was proud of his northern Ontario roots. Born and raised in Chaput Hughes, he married Shirley Milligan in 1957, moved to New Liskeard, then to Brantford, finally settling in Pembroke. Ross is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Leslie (Imre Rohonczy), son Paull (Pam Devine), and grandchildren Olivia, Griffin and Jenna, his sisters Pat Laframboise (Frank), Doreen Doyle (late Malcolm), Marilyn Mitchell (late Clair), and his brothers Brian Barkell (Harmonie) and Don Barkell (Marilyn), and many nieces, nephews and good friends. Predeceased by his parents, Harry and Mayme Barkell, of Chaput Hughes, ON. The funeral will be held on Monday, June 10th at 11am, at Wesley United Church, 275 Pembroke St. E, Pembroke, ON, with a light lunch reception and celebration of Ross' life to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Parkinson's Society would be appreciated.
