STEWART, Gwendolyn Erna
Passed away at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 in her 88th year.
Gwen Stewart of Pembroke, born October 24, 1923, daughter of the late James and Hedwig Stewart (nee Lindemann). Dear sister of Janet Stewart, Pembroke; Ethel Cowley (late Ron), Hamilton; and Robert Stewart (Bertha), Pembroke. Survived by sisters-in-law Beth and Ruth Stewart, both of Pembroke. Predeceased by brothers Clarence, Donald & Dr. James Stewart; and sister Mona Stewart. Dearly loved by six nieces & four nephews, numerous grand-nieces & nephews, two great grand-nieces and one great grand-nephew.
After graduation from the Pembroke Collegiate, she attended Ottawa Normal School and started to teach in a rural school in Alice. For seven years she taught grades 3 and 4 in the Pembroke Public Schools before specializing and teaching Home Economics in the Public and High School system. In 1971-72 she took a year of sabbatical leave and finished the BA that she had been working on through Ottawa University. She retired from teaching in 1978. Through the years, she travelled extensively, and enjoyed many sports including badminton, curling, cross-country skiing, skating and especially golf, where she had two holes-in-one. She very much enjoyed cottage life, and spent her summers at her cottage on Allumette Island.
Visitation at the MALCOLM, DEAVITT & BINHAMMER FUNERAL HOME, 141 Renfrew St., Pembroke on Friday from 2 to 4:00 and 7 to 9:00 p.m., and on Saturday after 1:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. Spring Interment in Calvin United Cemetery, Pembroke.
